Hi Mu Amp Info

The original Hi-Mu amp was the amp that got me into amp building. Back in the mid 90s they were $500+, which I could not afford at the time. So I investigated building my own amp.

I have always wanted to own a Hi-Mu amp, I believe the builder was way ahead of his time. A fully loaded Hi-Mu amp was available for under $1,000 which seems like a bargain today.

The original Hi-Mu amp was a single ended, Class A amp similar to a Champ. There was a choice of low-to-medium gain or high gain preamps. Later, the OT was upgraded to a high quality Magnequest transformer. Magnequest is well regarded for their hifi transformers.

Before Hi-Mu Amps ceased production, they offered three basic models as well as a few different upgrades.

I had a chance to play one at a local repair shop a while back. The cleans were among the best I've heard from any amp. The OD sound was a tad fuzzy, but sounded very good. The amp was built in true point-to-point constuction.

I recieved some literature from the builder back in 1995 and have scanned it to post here:

.pdf file, 7megs

The file includes two brochures I recieved from Hi-Mu, a price list, list of models and upgrades, and a review from the February 1994 issue of Guitar Player Magazine.

Amptone has some information and a photo of the Hi-Mu amp here:
